One of the most brilliant SF authors on the planet is a cool old dude named Alan Dean Foster. You may want to check out his book entitled ‘Cachalot’. It’s about whales and oceans and evolution. It has a cute surprise ending. This is one of his older books that he wrote back in the 60’s or early 70’s, so you may have to order it or check the used bookstores (or try ebay). Beautiful story!
Another book you must read that is similar is ‘Superluminal’ by Vonda McIntyre. Again with the evolution and adapting to oceans and space. Check the used bookstores (or ebay).
If this is something that you are interested in, you really REALLY must read these two books.
