Swimming would be an asset. If you can paddle 200 metres with fins and mask you may be acceptable. My son and I booked what is called a live aboard dive with the Cairns Dive Shop. The boat was called the Kangaroo Explorer(KE). It cost us $ 500 aussie dollars which catered for everything. What we got was a two hour boat transfer to a large catamaran(KE) where we spent two nights and three days. For that we had about 10 dives, eight meals and accomodation. It was value for money and I believe there are similar dive shops for the same cost. Enquire through the internet they will answer your questions. It is also very safe with all the safety procedures now in place.

Wow - The Great Barrier Reef just won a worldwide tourism award 2 days ago - you are in for a treat.

There is SO many options mate ... where to start.
First of all because you didn't say, I will assume you are flying into Cairns and going out from there.

There is snorkelling out the reef, glass bottom boats for the non-swimmers and diving. Obviously the snorkelling is easy and no classes needed. Dive classes, there is a lot to choose from

If you walk around town here there is SO many options and specials daily - so I would suggest wait until you get here and grab the best deal.

Here are some sites -

Dive courses available -

Adventures out on the reef:

Enjoy your time in Australia mate
