Fly to Brisbane or Cairns, and maybe go to two/three different cities along the Great Barrier Reef.
May – August best time, less jelly fish.
Stay at backpackers in a dorm or if you want a bit more comfort, get single/double room at backpacker hostel, quite comfy.

Start in Sydney, take one of the backpacker bus tours up the east coast. Stop along the way. When you get to Cairns I highly reccomend doing a live aboard dive boat for as long as you can afford. It is the best way to see the reef and you get to places the day trips can not go.

I don’t know as much as locals by far but I can tell you where I have been. Cairns by far is a great place to start and it is a short flight from Sydney. Mission beach is a destination in its own right. Super Hippie mecca, rainforests, beach and reef, beautiful place. Katherine’s gorge is a great place to take a bit of a paddle or a hike as well. I would check with a travel agency and just see what they offer, then you can mimic what they have and sub in backpacker hostils. If you make it up to Kakadu I would tent it, you can find some great spots just off the beaten path with some incredible swimming holes. Keep in mind the exchange rate is great if you are from the US. I did so much all over that country and spent only 3000.00 USD, airfare and hotels included.I spent a month from cairns to darwin to kakadu to Katherine to sydney to cannaberra, with mountains and caves and water throughout. a couple of years ago and I can’t even begin to tell you all the beautiful places I went. I have been trying to get back ever since. Have a great time, I could sit here and reminisce for hours. I wish I were going along. Drink XXXX, and VB it is the nectar of the Gods.
